VT FOOD

Vermont is a wonderful place to live and eat locally.  Many vegetables, fruits, dairy products, meats, eggs, grains, and legumes are grown and harvested by our many fantastic farmers.  When shopping for your food, you'll routinely find local eggs, dairy products, and vegetables.  The grains and legumes exist but are not as readily available.  Check out the table below to find a grain or legume source that might work for you.  We have local sunflower oil from Butterworks Farms - the oil is delicious in salad dressings and works well in baking and medium to medium-low sauteeing.  Butter and ghee (clarified butter which allows for a higher sauteeing and frying temperature) are the main options.

One of the best places to get this food in the summer is directly from the farmer.  There are a few different ways to get the freshest possible food in the summer:  your own garden, direcly from farmer, farmer's markets, CSA's, food retailers.   Community Supported Agrictulture (CSA) is a prescription purchase program where you pay money up front to enjoy a given share of the food they grow and harvest.

Vermont and the Champlain Valley offer many local and delicious foods.  Click on one of the links below to get a more detailed list.  Of course, this is a partial list.  If you find something you want everyone to know about, or find it in a different place than we have listed, let us know and we can add it.

Many folks wonder how easy is it to get a balanced and varied diet based on local foods - very easily.  Not only can you get many different foods from Vermont, but your diet will vary significiantly as you eat with the seasons.  The average food consumer does not vary their diet seasonally, they may eat the same 30-40 grocery items every week.  How many different things can you eat in Vermont?  Can you eat more than 50 different things?
